German car manufacturer, Volkswagen, has recently announced that they have made it into the top 3 car manufacturers globally in terms of sales for the first time, well, ever.

Overtaking the once giant Ford in sales for the first half of the year, Volkswagen is happy that they are moving in the right direction hoping to expand their global presence and once again increase sales. Increasing their whoesales by 7.2% to 3.31 million vehicles, topping Fords 3.22 million.

This is great news for VW, but not so great news for Ford. Maybe this will usher them into releasing some more environmentally friendly cars which seem to be all the rage in leui of rising gas prices. Is this the begining of the end of Ford, or will they be on top once again?

Veyron

Every once in a while you come across something that is so luxuriously superior and elegantly sexy that you can’t keep you mind off of it. I’m referring to something that is so extravagantly beautiful and dynamically robust that it deserves all of the hype that surrounds it. I’m talking about a car that has been described as “the fastest most powerful and most expensive road car the world has ever seen”. If you still don’t know what I’m talking about then allow me to introduce you to a super sportscar which has been praised as “the greatest automobile ever made”, the Bugatti Veyron. Before you continue onwards I should mention that if your financial standing is not approaching “island buying” status then the only relationship you will ever have with this car is the same type the deaf have with music, none whatsoever. With that being said I would recommend that you STOP! reading NOW because the Veyron is so painfully untouchable that it’s completely pointless teasing yourself any further.

In 1998, under CEO Ferdinand Piëch, Volkswagon AG acquired Bugatti and their designers were encouraged to restore the legacy and tradition that was created under it’s founder Ettore Bugatti. The project was headed by chief designer Hartmut Warkus along with exterior designer Jozef Kaban. In 2000 after years of tremendous efforts spent on concepts and revisions the utterly stunning Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was introduced to the world however due to executive changes in Volkswagon AG the Veyron underwent even more redesigns until finally making its way into the market in 2005.

The Bugatti Veyron, which was named after French race car driver Pierre Veyron, is a 2 seater 4 wheel drive carbon fiber bodied super coupe that comes equipped with a massive quad-turbocharged, 8 liter, 16-cylinder engine that has the mechanical muscle needed to produce 1,001 horsepower. The 7 speed transmission & AMD system controls the Veyron which has a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 253.8 mph. The Veyron also includes 10 cooling radiators, a retractable spoiler used for air brakes, and a gorgeous leather interior.

Alright folks lets get focused because you know that it’s time to get realistic. I’m sure that you all are well aware that this is not your average car and you’re going to need more than an average paying job if the faintest idea of ” I want one” ever tip-toes into your head. Not to mention the fact that the Veyron is highly exclusive with Bugatti making only 300. Rich is an understatement, you’re going to have to be nothing less than wealthy if you plan on getting involved with this car in the current economic environment. So if you’re an ordinary person who receives an ordinary yearly income then this car is simply out of your league and I would advice you to get a little “Veyron Amnesia”. Because the only way you are ever going to physically own this vehicle is if you build an innovative incredibly popular online multimedia social networking website that attracts Google who ends up buying your business for billions of dollars. Unless you create something of that magnitude I’m sorry to say this but you are NEVER GONNA GET THIS CAR. Price Tag: The Bugatti Veyron ranges from the base price of $1,500,000 to as much as $3.8 million.

smart forfun2 a monster good time

With the recent announcement that Roger Penske's UnitedAuto Group will be offering SMART FourTwos in the US in 2008, DaimlerChrysler has decided to have a little fun and show people what the SMART brand is all about. To that end they have married a SMART car to a Unimog chassis developed by Greek rally racer Stefan Attart. Although similar to a vehicle created in 2005, known as the forfun, the forfun2 has a much higher stance and manages to be cute and imposing at the same time.

OK, so it's no Smartuki, but it's still wacky enough to be entertaining. While the Smartuki replaced the SMART 3-cylinder with a Suzuki GSXR1000 mill that had been massaged to 180 hp, this beast is Unimog powered. Although only capable of 84 hp, the torque is impressive at 191 ft-lbs. The quarter-mile might be a challenge, but rocks, sand and MINIs should be no problem: full press release and additional photos after the jump.

smart forfun2: The combination of two vehicles with cult status

Stuttgart, Sep 13, 2006

The smart forfun, a smart forfour with monster truck ambitions, caused quite a stir at the Athens Motor Show in November 2005. Following the extremely positive response to this, the decision to develop a further vehicle with a similar character was a logical step.

Following the initiative of Mercedes-Benz Hellas, Stefan Attart (46), Greek Champion in 4x4 Rally Races had clear ideas: the new off-road vehicle should have the body of a smart fortwo. A suitable platform now had to be found.

Awakening the inner child

DaimlerChrysler has always had an unusually large range of off-road vehicles -- from the M-Class to the G-model and the Unimog. One look at the smart forfun2 (pronounced smart for-fun to the second) and you see straightaway that it is based on a Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 series.

This is what makes it so fascinating: the combination of two vehicles, each of which has achieved cult status in its respective segment. So it's no wonder that the smart forfun2 awakens the inner child in everyone who sees it.

Combining vehicle and platform

But first things first: once the platform for the smart forfun2 had been decided, in January of this year Stefan Attart started working on the first designs. It goes without saying that there's more to an off-road vehicle like this than simply screwing four wheels under a smart fortwo.

Based on technical drawings of both vehicles, a design was created that for the first time clearly showed the direction the new vehicle was to take. Stefan Attart laid down the design that was to connect the vehicle with the platform, and precise attachment points were defined on the axles and the chassis.

Oversized dimensions

The engine and transmission were adopted from the Unimog. The OM 352, a six-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 5,675 cc, was given a prominent and clearly visible position on the front axle. It delivers 84 bhp -- an impressive figure for the smart forfun2. The diesel version of the production car has a 41 bhp engine.

The dimensions also turn heads: tyres on 26 inch rims with a diameter of 140 cm. Not to mention ground clearance of 65 centimetres and an unbelievable total height of 3.7 metres.

Maximum off-road mobility

The designers wanted to give the smart forfun2 maximum off-road mobility -- and the platform of the 406 offers optimum prerequisites for off-road driving. The off-road character is further emphasized by oversized wheels and the safety cage made of aluminium tubes.

To optimise the vehicle for off-road driving, in addition to special shock absorbers Stefan Attart fitted manually controlled air suspension. This enables the driver to specifically influence individual springs -- a particular advantage on extreme downhill gradients.

Uncompromising vehicle concept

Everything in one car that is sure to divide opinions -- or boys from men. Two vehicles, which each represent an uncompromising vehicle concept in their respective environments, and yet remain unique. And this combination in the smart forfun2 is sure to cause even more controversy.

As with the real smart fortwo, some people are sure to find the concept of the smart forfun2 too radical, whilst others will love it -- with not many opinions in-between. However running apart from the herd is probably the best prerequisite for achieving cult status.

Lamborghini, the brand synonymous with sporty automobile pleasure for the street. And when you see the new Gallardo, you also know why. 500 hp is at work inside this attractive and, most importantly, airflow-optimized body. Hamann Motorsport is now offering a styling and tuning packet especially for the Gallardo that brings its motorsport character clearly into focus and that gives this noble bull even more performance.

Already the first impression the Hamann Lamborghini Gallardo makes indicates that this is hardly a standard model. The Hamann specialists constructed a comprehensive aerodynamics program for this racy sports car. The front is dominated by an innovatively designed front spoiler. The Hamann engineers indeed oriented themselves in the develop on Italian design, but they also included the typically powerful and sporty stylistic elements of the tradition-rich company. The impressive appearance is also reinforced by the frontal air scoops, the broad side skirts and the air intake screens located on the sides. No question about it - the Hamann Lamborghini Gallardo is a genuine racing car for the street. More than anything else, the rear portion makes this clear. A mighty, three-piece rear wing à la motorsport doesn’t just assure the appropriate optics, but also increased application force on the rear axle at higher speeds. Almost the same applies for the wide Hamann rear diffuser. It makes the rear appearance of the Gallardo unmistakable, and the car virtually sucks itself onto the asphalt.

Thanks to the comprehensive aerodynamic components, the Hamann Lamborghini Gallardo makes a clearly sportier and more exclusive impression. And it wouldn’t be a real Hamann if the performance was not optimized as well. By using sport steel catalytic converters and two double-pipe sport mufflers with 76 millimetre diameter in a V2A stainless steel design, the performance of the Hamann Lamborghini was increased by a total of 28 hp up to 528 hp. At the same time, the maximum torque was increased by 50 Nm to a total of 560 Nm as a result of this modification. This data speaks clearly and confirms the external appearance.

The sporty-sophisticated concept of the Hamann Lamborghini Gallardo is rounded off by the multi-part light metal Anniversary II wheel rims. These exclusive wheels, in a multispoke design, convey a sense of pure motorsport feeling. The silver wheel rim, with its highly polished INOX steel lip, makes a simultaneously refined and luxurious impression. The front axle bears wheels sized 9 x 19 inches with 235/35 Z R19 tires. In the rear, the Anniversary II in the size 12 x 19 inches with 295/30 Z R19 tires was selected.

SAAB Unveils Aero-X Concept

If you've been waiting for a futuristic sports coupe, look no further than SAAB's Aero-X concept. Powered by a twin-turbo, 400 bhp BioPower V6 engine, this concept is all about eye candy, with a cockpit canopy (replaces doors and windscreen pillars) that gives the driver full 180-degree views. The ultralight carbon fiber chassis, lightweight powertrain, and all-wheel drive suspension help the Aero-X rocket from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds (computer simulated trials).

The Aero-X concept deliberately evokes Saab's aerospace heritage.
